Congratulations to the 2017 Young Physician Advocate Scholarship Recipients!

April 17, 2017

APMA is proud to announce the following recipients of the Young Physician Advocate Scholarship, to attend the 2017 APMA State Advocacy Forum, May 12–13:

  • Alicia Canzanese, DPM
  • Jonathon Rouse, DPM
  • Tyler Tidwell, DPM

This scholarship provides travel and lodging courtesy of APMA’s Center for Professional Advocacy and the Young Physician Program. Out of a very strong applicant pool, these recipients were chosen based on their interest and involvement in advocacy efforts and proven commitment to advocating for state legislative initiatives. You can read a few words from them below:

“It is important for all young physicians to be involved in their profession and state advocacy because local, state, and federal policy can have an enormous effect on medical practice and day to day business. It is important for young physicians to realize that policy changes today can affect practice for a lifetime. It is often said that 'complacency is the enemy of democracy.' Without participating in state advocacy or being aware of current issues, practitioners can miss out on valuable opportunities to impact the future of the profession.” —Alicia Canzanese, DPM, Pennsylvania

“It is important for young physicians to become involved in state advocacy because we are the future of the profession. … [W]e need to be seen as physicians instead of allied health professionals in the eyes of the government (VA) as well as the military (TRICARE). This is important for the federal services to be able to maintain quality physicians.” —Jonathon Rouse, DPM, Federal Services

“As podiatrists … it is important for all members to take responsibility in doing their part to keep us relevant and have our opinion heard. When young physicians start taking an active part in being involved in state advocacy, we can build the important habits and patterns that will keep us involved the rest of our career.” —Tyler Tidwell, DPM, resident, Indiana

In recognition of the stellar applications for this scholarship, and many applicants sharing a desire to become more involved in the advocacy process, APMA will be holding a webinar, “Advocacy 101 for Young Physicians,” sometime this summer. Stay tuned to the Weekly Focus for more information!
