APMA Advocacy Accomplishments

APMA has celebrated many major advocacy accomplishments protecting and enhancing podiatric medicine:

  • Defeat of CMS proposed orthotics and prosthetics rule requiring additional certification and licensure to fabricate and furnish orthotics and prosthetics
  • Provider Non-Discrimination provision included in health reform, making it illegal for insurance companies to discriminate against podiatric physicians and other providers with respect to participation and coverage if they are acting within their scope of practice under state law
  • Inclusion in Health-Care Information Technology (health IT) adoption incentives in Medicare
  • Medicare policy change to allow podiatric physicians to serve as president of the medical staff in hospitals in states where it is not otherwise precluded by law
  • Medicare policy change to allow podiatric physicians acting within the scope of their Medicare benefit and state law to order portable X-ray services
  • Exclusion for DPMs from competitive bidding for supplying patients with durable medical equipment, prosthetics, and supplies
  • Exclusion for DPMs from having to purchase a surety bond to supply patients with durable medical equipment, prosthetics, and supplies
  • Elimination of 1099 reporting requirements for vendor transactions of $600 or more annually
  • Incentives for adoption of e-Prescribing
  • Incentive bonuses for PQRI/PQRS (Physician Quality Reporting Initiative/System)
