The Association of Extremity Nerve Surgeons – Extremity Nerve Research Foundation

The Association of Extremity Nerve Surgeons (AENS) was founded to promote the collaborative study and development of medical research regarding the treatment of extremity nerve disease. Membership includes MDs, DOs, DPMs, PhDs, and medical students interested in furthering dissemination of current knowledge and development of basic medical research in peripheral nerve disease.

The mission of AENS is to provide charitable outreach and promote scientific research and education for extremity nerve treatment.

Additional Information/Requirements:

  • Projects/missions located in Ecuador.
  • Purpose is to treat leprosy patients and perform extremity nerve surgery. 
  • Students are allowed upon approval of experience. Costs are covered by the volunteer unless grants are given for the trip for residents, staff, and/or students.
  • Valid passport necessary.

Baja Project for Crippled Children

For over 25 years, on a weekly basis, the all-volunteer staff of the Baja Project for Crippled Children has operated a free clinic out of the Red Cross Hospital in Mexicali, Mexico. Once a month, project members perform surgery on patients with complex congenital and acquired neuromuscular deformities. The team of podiatric surgeons and residents operates on complex deformities such as congenital clubfoot. Additionally, deformities from polio are seen and treated.

Additional Information/Requirements:

  • Project/mission location may include in Mexico and Honduras. 
  • Duties performed include surgical correction of congenital deformities, surgical treatment of clubfoot–pediatric/adult, surgical treatment of neuromuscular defect–Cerebral palsy and cavovarus deformity, and history and physical examination, casting, scrub assistances, and OR preparation. 
  • Valid passport and malpractice insurance necessary.

Christian Medical and Dental Association 

International mission service is an integral part of the Christian Medical and Dental Association. International efforts reach out to those who rarely, if ever, have access to medical or dental health services, and the association partners with national organizations to provide educational training so local health-care providers can deliver improved care after a team leaves.

Additional Information/Requirements:

  • Project/mission locations include Mamelodi, South Africa, and Central America. 
  • Must register 6–8 months prior to departure date. 
  • Valid passport and medical clearance by the government is required.

Des Moines University, Department of Global Health

Des Moines University’s (DMU) global health department gives students, faculty, alumni, and others an opportunity to gain real-world experience in international medicine. DMU’s international experiences provide a breadth of cultural, social, political, and clinical experiences that are not available within the US. This medical mission provides services to the people of El Salvador and refines students' medical skills.

Additional Information/Requirements:

  • Project/mission located in Puerto Parada and El Salvador.
  • Duties include performing histories, examining patients, diagnosing patients, prescribing medicines and confirming with clinicians, and public health education.
  • Participants must be DMU students.
  • Valid passport, proper vaccinations, and medical insurance required.

DOCARE International

DOCARE International is a medical outreach organization dedicated to providing much-needed health care to indigent and isolated people in remote areas around the world.

Additional Information/Requirements:

  • Project/mission locations include Guatemala, Nicaragua, Malawi, and Haiti.
  • Medical training not required.

El Ayudante

El Ayudante—the helper—is a Christian humanitarian organization based in León, Nicaragua, dedicated to partnering with the Nicaraguan people to transform the nation—one child, one family, and one community at a time.

Additional Information/Requirements:

  • Purpose is to provide medical care to villagers who have no other access to health care.
  • Duties include work in medical clinics in rural Nicaraguan villages.
  • Each team recruits its own members and could require specific credentials.
  • Valid passport, proper vaccinations, and medical license required.

ENAHPA (Ethiopian North American Health Professionals Association, Inc.)

ENAHPA’s mission is to address the health-care needs of Ethiopians by enhancing access and delivery of medical services, promoting preventive care, and transferring knowledge, skills, and state-of-the-art technology.
 
Additional Information/Requirements:

  • Most missions last two weeks (usually held in February, May, or October).
  • Missions range from providing complex surgeries to weeks-long experiential training sessions for Ethiopian medical practitioners. Coupled with the outreach, mission participants are immersed in Ethiopia’s historic culture and traditions.
  • Missions are led by a team of internationally recognized medical professionals representing five continents in various specialties.

Faith in Practice

The mission of Faith in Practice is to improve the physical, spiritual, and economic conditions of the poor in Guatemala through short-term surgical, medical, and dental mission trips and health-related educational programs. The mission of Faith in Practice is based on an ecumenical understanding that as people of God, we are called to demonstrate the love and compassion that is an outward sign of God’s presence among us. Faith in Practice’s life-changing medical mission is to minister to the poor while providing a spiritually enriching experience for volunteers.

Additional Information/Requirements:

  • Duties may include triaging patients on the first day, performing podiatric surgery, and staffing a daily podiatry clinic.
  • License, hospital privileges, letter from medical chief of staff, and passport required.

Global Partners serves more than 90 countries with 230 missionaries. The mission to exalt Jesus Christ by calling and mobilizing believers to global ministries of evangelism, church planting, leadership development, and ministries of compassion is strong.

Additional Information/Requirements:

  • Project/mission locations may include Zimba Hospital, Zambia (Africa).
  • The purpose of the project is to provide medical and surgical care to the local community and medical training to the local staff. 
  • Duties may include surgery.
  • Medical and surgical skills necessary.
  • Medical license and passport required. Visa obtained upon entry to Zambia at airport.

Healing the Children

Healing the Children’s sole mission is to provide medical care to children in need. Volunteer medical and surgical health-care professionals treat patients and share their expertise with host country health-care  professionals during procedures and in-service sessions.

  • Project/mission locations vary.
  • Duties include children's reconstructive foot and ankle surgery.
  • Medical license, valid passport for at least 6 months, visa to Nepal/Vietnam, vaccinations, and travel health insurance (evacuation insurance) required.

Healthy Athletes Program (Special Olympics)

The Healthy Athletes program is dedicated to providing health services and education to Special Olympics athletes and changing the way health systems interact with people with intellectual disabilities. Through free health screenings, training for health-care professionals, and evaluation of the health status of people with intellectual disabilities, Healthy Athletes has become a powerful public health organization worldwide.

Additional Information/Requirements:

  • Duties may include assisting athletes with access to the health-care system and  instructing health-care professionals in evaluation of the foot and ankle. 
  • Malpractice insurance; commitment to put on screenings in home state/country.
  • Some travel may be necessary. Will need to pay for transportation. Hotel and food provided.

International Service Learning

International Service Learning (ISL) enlists medical and educational volunteer teams to provide services to underserved populations in Central and South America, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Africa.
 
ISL provides educational opportunities for students from over a hundred universities in several countries. It is the goal of ISL to partner student and professional teams from developed countries with service opportunities in developing countries.

The Kitchen, Inc. 

The Kitchen’s mission is to create a place where persons, especially the poor, are welcomed and cared for with dignity and compassion.

The Kitchen is widely recognized as a progressive innovator for meeting needs and addressing root causes of poverty and homelessness. Services of The Kitchen include housing, food, counseling, health care, education, youth services, clothing, advocacy, life skills, and homelessness prevention.

  • Project location limited to Springfield, MO.
  • Duties include general care.
  • Services are ongoing.

Liga International - Flying Doctors of Mercy

Liga International is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of the people of Sinaloa, Mexico, by providing free health care and education.

Additional Information/Requirements:

  • Volunteers must become members of Liga International.
  • Duties may include amputation, injections, reconstructive surgery, clubfoot casting, and tumor removal.

Mercy Mission Teams

Mercy Mission Teams is a Christ-centered, non-profit, missionary organization. Teams consist of evangelism, leadership training, medical, and construction volunteers.

Additional Information/Requirements:

  • Mission locations include Nicaragua and Peru.
  • Duties may include treating patients, providing food for the poor, participation in construction projects, providing access to affordable clean water in rural areas, and distributing Bibles.
  • Medical mission is conducted in April.
  • Medical personnel and construction skills needed.

North Carolina Baptist Men/Baptists on Mission

North Carolina Baptist Men help Christians share the love of Jesus by praying, giving, and becoming involved in missions with their time and talents. NC Baptist Men strives to make North Carolina Baptists aware of human needs and provide opportunities to help meet needs and share the Gospel.

People to People International

People to People International promotes international understanding and friendship through educational, cultural, and humanitarian activities.

  • Project/mission locations vary but may include Cuba, Bulgaria, Morocco, and South Africa.
  • Duties may include attending meetings, actively discussing podiatry and health care, and examining foot deformities.

Shepherd's Clinic 

Shepherd’s Clinic is a volunteer-driven organization that has been an innovator in providing health care for the uninsured. The clinic’s mission is to provide comprehensive health care for those who cannot afford commercial insurance yet do not qualify for government assistance.  With a catchment area covering 13 Baltimore City zip codes, Shepherd’s Clinic provides health-care services through hundreds of dedicated volunteers.

  • Services are available only in Baltimore, MD.
  • Duties may include providing health care for the uninsured, podiatric medicine, and surgery.
  • Medical license required.
  • Services are ongoing.

Sister Maura Brannick, CSC, Health Center

The Sister Maura Brannick, CSC, Health Center provides primary health-care services to uninsured residents of St. Joseph County in Indiana. The focus is on the unemployed or working poor, providing services for those who fall below 150 percent of the federally designated poverty level. The volunteer physicians and staff provide primary medical services while stressing patient education and preventive health care for patients and their families.

Additional Information/Requirements:

  • Services available only in South Bend, IN.
  • Duties may include minor (in-office) surgical procedures.
  • St. Joseph Regional Medical Center staff affiliation and Indiana licensure required.

Texas Podiatric Medical Foundation

The Texas Podiatric Medical Foundation (TPMF) is the charitable arm of the Texas Podiatric Medical Association. TPMF believes in reaching out to the community. Several programs have been developed to educate and assist those in need of proper foot-health care.

Additional Information/Requirements:

  • Project/mission locations include Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
  • Purpose is to serve the underprivileged and to provide resident training and exposure.
  • Duties may include surgical evaluation and surgical correction.
  • Each volunteer is responsible for his or her own travel and other expenses. Residents are paid for by TPMF and attending physicians.

Yucatan Crippled Children's Project

The Yucatan Crippled Children's Project is a humanitarian effort of the Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine. The project provides indigent crippled children from the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico with surgical care of deformed limbs. The program began as an outgrowth of humanitarian relief to the Yucatan in 1988 after Hurricane Gilbert.

Additional Information/Requirements:

  • Project/missions located in Merida/Progresso, Yucatan State, Mexico.
  • Duties may include screening, surgical services, financial support, and logistical support.
  • Must be certified by or board eligible with the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle preferred. Third-year surgical residents with supervision.
  • Passport required.
