Building relationships with current leaders and like-minded colleagues can play a critical role in fostering future leaders in the profession. However, it can be difficult to know how to build those relationships or where to start in your leadership journey. The APMA Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) is a leadership-intensive program designed to support an exclusive group of young physicians (members who have graduated from podiatric medical school within the past 10 years) with a vested interest in future leadership opportunities. The 10-month program will kick off at the ELP Leadership Summit in Chicago in October and conclude with a recognition ceremony at the APMA 2025 Annual Scientific Meeting (The National) in Dallas in July 2025.

The 2024–25 application cycle is now open. Applications will be accepted through August 3. Email your completed application and supporting materials to Young Physicians/Clinical Affairs Program Coordinator Julia Jacobson at jjacobson@apma.org. 

How to Apply

When submitting your application, you will be asked to include the following:

• the completed application form;
• a copy of your current CV; and
• a pre-formatted statement of support from your component society or other sponsoring organization.*

You will be notified by the end of August if you have been selected to participate in the program.

*Note: Applicants are encouraged to reach out to their state component as soon as possible regarding sponsorship. Contact information for your state component society can be found here.

YPI Online: Growing in Practice 

This virtual program was held on Saturday, March 19. Programming included a panel discussion on value versus volume, how to manage employees who you do not employ, hiring and firing, and more. The final program is available.

The Young Physicians' Institute 

Due to the continuing impact of COVID-19 and concerns about travel, the 2021 YPI was held virtually on Saturday, October 2, 2021. Topics included advocating for yourself and the profession, podiatry and the USMLE, how to join your state board, and more. YPI Online: Starting Practice

This free half-day virtual program was held Saturday, June 12, 2021. The session covered need-to-know details for getting started post-residency including hospital privileging and credentialing, billing and coding basics, tips for starting practice, and more. The full program is available.
