Changes in Medical and Surgical Tracks for 2024

The National continues to evolve based on your feedback. This year, we are offering a single track in the morning highlighting our most popular topics, so attendees don’t have to choose between two sessions they want to attend. We have also shortened some track times in the afternoon to help prevent fatigue from setting in. Additionally, we are increasing access to hands-on learning by bringing in top vendors to provide live, non-CECH demonstrations throughout the conference.

Beginning and ending times for the daily educational program schedule are listed below. The schedule for each day includes breaks, which are not identified here.

Thursday, August 8 • 7:30 a.m.3 p.m.
Friday, August 9 • 7 a.m.5:15 p.m.
Saturday, August 10 • 8 a.m.6 p.m.
Sunday, August 11 • 7 a.m.12:30 p.m.

Be sure to complete your attendee evaluation after the meeting so The National can continue to adapt to meet your needs. APMA welcomes your feedback as The National—the must-attend meeting for every foot and ankle physician and surgeon—evolves to meet the changing needs of the podiatric community.

Opening Address: John S. Steinberg, DPM

Thursday, August 8 • 34 p.m.

The National is excited to announce John S. Steinberg, DPM, as its opening session speaker. Dr. Steinberg is a professor and full-time faculty member of the department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. He earned his DPM from Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine in 1995; completed a three-year surgical residency at Inova Fairfax in Virginia and a one-year Diabetic Foot/Limb Salvage Fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio; and is a past president of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He currently serves as co-director of the Center for Wound Healing at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, program director for the MedStar Health PMSR/RRA, and a faculty member for the Georgetown Diabetic Limb Salvage Research Fellowship.

Dr. Steinberg has published more than 200 papers and recently published his first textbook, Functional Limb Salvage: The Multidisciplinary Team Approach. He has lectured extensively on diabetic limb salvage nationally and internationally, and is actively involved in clinical research and publication. Dr. Steinberg’s address will cover his journey as a podiatrist, including his many roles in educating and leading his podiatric and allopathic colleagues.

Event Location & Hotel Information

APMA is aware of fraudulent program websites that pose as official websites, along with unauthorized housing and registration companies attempting to solicit event attendees. Please note that these websites are scams and you should avoid sharing any personal and/or financial information with them. Booking your hotel through the links below is the ONLY way to ensure that you have a valid hotel reservation. Please see additional details below under “Housing Scam Alert.

Event Location

The National will be held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC. The center is located at 801 Allen Y. Lew Place (formerly Mt. Vernon Place) NW, Washington, DC 20001. All events for The National will be held here.

Headquarters Hotel

The National’s headquarters hotel is the Marriott Marquis Washington, DC. The property is connected to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, allowing you to get to the meeting space while avoiding DC’s August humidity.

APMA has negotiated a special attendee rate of $259/night (up to double occupancy plus tax, currently 15.95 percent). To take advantage of this discounted price, book now: https://book.passkey.com/e/50731549. The deadline to book your room is July 16.

Nearby Hotels

The National is also offering room blocks at two nearby hotels: Residence Inn Washington Downtown Convention Center and Courtyard Washington Downtown Convention Center.

The Residence Inn Washington Downtown Convention Center ($239/night up to double occupancy plus tax; reservation link: https://book.passkey.com/e/50765972). The deadline to book your room is July 16.

The Courtyard Washington Downtown Convention Center ($219/night up to double occupancy plus tax; reservation link: https://book.passkey.com/e/50765897). The deadline to book your room is July 16.

Housing Scam Alert

Each year, APMA receives reports from members and exhibitors that companies claiming to be affiliated with The National or the host hotel have contacted them with offers to book discounted rooms. This year is no exception. We have been advised that several unaffiliated companies have again been aggressively pursuing attendees of The National with discounted hotel rooms through their company.

For your own protection, do not make reservations through any other housing provider or travel company. Many reports of false and deceptive activities by these companies abound; some things to be aware of:

  • Many of these companies cannot guarantee a reservation because they do not have contracts for room blocks with our conference hotel. They will contact a housing wholesaler to see if anything is available to resell to you.
  • Legitimate wholesalers cannot knowingly book show attendees into the show block. Only the official show housing provider can book within our room block. If the hotel determines that an attendee has been solicited or contacted by a wholesaler, they may increase the room rate to match or exceed the group rate or the reservation may be cancelled. A rate quote from a room broker is not a guaranteed rate.
  • Rooms booked through unauthorized housing companies most often are to be fully prepaid. Rather than a one-night or no deposit, an unauthorized company may require non-refundable payment of the full cost for the entire stay for each room booked at the time of booking. NEVER give your credit card information unless you are 100-percent certain you know who is on the other end to prevent unauthorized use of your information.
  • Reservation confirmations and numbers are often not available from these companies until less than a week before the arrival date. Even then, these may not guarantee that a room will be available when you arrive.
  • Name changes on reservations with unofficial wholesalers/room brokers may be difficult or impossible to make.
  • Our staff will not be able to assist attendees and exhibitors who have reserved rooms outside the block if problems result from booking through an unauthorized company.

Of course, this causes significant hardship and inconvenience to the individuals and their companies. Reservations made other than through the information provided by APMA will be at your own risk. If you have been contacted by another company purporting to represent one of our host hotels or APMA, please report them at 301-581-9200 or thenational@apma.org.

We look forward to seeing you at The National!

Call for Abstracts at The National 2024

Call for Abstracts

Thank you for your interest in presenting your research relating to the care of the foot and ankle at the APMA 2024 Annual Scientific Meeting (The National). The meeting will be held August 8–11 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC.

If you are interested in sharing your research with attendees at The National, visit the submission site and review the rules and guidelines for submission. The online submission site for abstracts is open and all abstracts must be submitted online by February 23, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. EST.

Grading Procedures

Abstracts will be read in a “blind” fashion. Authors' names and institutions of origin will not be identified.

Graders are podiatric physicians. Each abstract is reviewed and graded by at least three graders, and the final grade is determined by averaging the graders’ ratings.

Grades are influenced by: significance of the study; content and clarity; specific number of cases or specimen studies; clinical or research data to support the study’s conclusions; minimum follow-up of one year per patient for results describing surgical procedures; and new or modified techniques as they relate to diagnosis, surgery, complications, or other phases of podiatric medical and surgical problems.

Abstract Presentation

If an abstract is selected for oral presentation, the primary author identified on the submission form will receive an invitation to participate as a member of The National faculty and the abstract will be incorporated into the educational program at the event.

If an abstract is selected for poster presentation, the primary and corresponding author will be notified by email. The poster will be displayed for the entire meeting (three days).

APMA does not provide travel reimbursement, honorarium, or per diem for poster abstract presenters. All APMA member students, residents, and fellow authors receive complimentary meeting registration.

Poster Design Guidelines

  • The abstract should be as informative as possible, including a brief statement of the purpose of the study or why it was done, the methods used, the results observed, and conclusions based on the results.
  • The poster exhibit should not be commercial in nature or promote any product overtly.
  • Trade names may be used but should be used with discretion.
  • Clear identification that “this poster exhibit is sponsored by [company/sponsor]” should be noted.
  • Poster set-up and removal:
    • All presenting authors must check in at the Speaker/Presenting Author Registration desk before poster set-up.
    • A four-foot tall by eight-foot wide (48” tall x 96” wide) tack board will be provided at the the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
    • Posters should not be larger than the provided tack boards. Presenters are required to provide their own tacks/mounting materials.
    • Handouts of the poster are encouraged and may be placed on the tables in the poster abstract area of the exhibit hall.
    • Posters must be removed immediately after the Poster Abstracts Symposium on Saturday, August 10 at 2:30 p.m. APMA is not responsible for posters that are left after the conclusion of the meeting.

Abstract Competition

All non-industry-sponsored oral and poster abstracts presented at The National will be eligible for the APMA Abstract Competition. The top three accepted abstracts in each of the categories below will be selected by a panel of judges appointed by the Education Committee. The winners will be announced at the meeting. First-place winner will receive $500, second-place winner will receive $250, and third-place winner will receive $100. Please note that awards will be given to the primary author only.

The six categories of awards are as follows:

  • Outstanding Oral Abstract Presentation
  • Outstanding Single Case or Small Case Study/Series Poster Abstract
  • Outstanding Large Case Study/Series Poster Abstract
  • Outstanding Resident Poster Abstract
  • Outstanding Student Poster Abstract
  • Outstanding American Public Health Association (APHA) Foot and Ankle Health Section Poster Abstract*

*The Outstanding APHA Foot and Ankle Health Section Poster Abstract category recognizes one poster abstract on public health or disparities. The primary author on the public health abstract must be a member of APHA Foot and Ankle Health Section as well as a member of APMA. Only one winner will be selected to receive $250 and the Arthur E. Helfand, DPM, award.

Award Criteria

The judges will consider the visual design and impact of the poster as well as the significance of the study, including its importance to the advancement of the practice of podiatric medicine. Other factors that the judges will evaluate include: the study’s content and clarity; specific number of cases or specimens studied; clinical or research data to support study conclusions; minimum follow-up of one year per patient for results describing surgical procedures; and new or modified techniques as they relate to diagnosis, surgery, complications, or other phases of podiatric medical and surgical problems.

The APMA Board of Trustees, abstract judges, chair of the Education Committee, or employees/independent contractors of APMA are ineligible to participate in the APMA Abstract Competition; with the caveat that residents supervised by the above-referenced parties may participate, but the above-referenced parties may not receive any monetary award.

Check out the winners from the 2023 Abstracts Competition.
