Crystal Holmes, DPM, Honored with Glenn B. Gastwirth, DPM, Leadership Award
APMA Executive Director and CEO James R. Christina, DPM, presented Crystal Holmes, DPM, with the Glenn B. Gastwirth, DPM, Leadership Award on Saturday, March 17, at the APMA House of Delegates meeting in Washington, DC.
"I’m looking out for the best interest of us all. Confrontation can lead to resolution and leaves us with a better world," Dr. Holmes said, reflecting on advocacy efforts. Dr. Holmes expressed her thanks to the house for the prestigious award.
Frank Kase, DPM, Receives President's Award
Outgoing President Ira H. Kraus, DPM, presented Frank Kase, DPM, with the President's Award on Saturday at the 98th Annual APMA House of Delegates meeting in Washington, DC.
Dr. Kase thanked his family for making the sacrifices that have allowed him to be involved in the profession. He spoke briefly about accomplishing more legislatively. "We have to recognize what you can and can’t do, and build a team to get the job done," said Dr. Kase.
Gerald Peterson, DPM, and Lloyd Smith, DPM, Receive Distinguished Service Citation
Outgoing President Ira H. Kraus, DPM, awarded both Gerald D. Peterson, DPM, and Lloyd Smith, DPM, with a Distinguished Service Citation on Saturday at the 98th Annual APMA House of Delegates meeting in Washington, DC.
The Distinguished Service Citation is APMA’s highest honor, presented in recognition of outstanding sustained accomplishments on the national level in scientific, professional, or civic endeavors.
Dr. Peterson gave special thanks to John Carson, APMA's first lobbyist, who he said taught him how to "make the ask," and how to "seal the deal" when talking to legislators about the profession's goals. He thanked Faye Frankfort, former APMA Legislative Advocacy department director, who continued the progress on educating Congress about the profession. He thanked Oliver (Ollie) Foster, DPM; Irvin O. Kanat, DPM; and many other podiatry pioneers who influenced his career.
Dr. Smith stated he was "humbled and appreciative" of the award. "APMA and podiatry have been a passion of mine since I was a student. Our profession was, at that time, struggling for credibility in health care. Thanks to all in the house, past and present," Dr. Smith said.
Randy Kaplan, DPM, and Rep. Brad Wenstrup, DPM (R-OH), Receive Award of Excellence
Outgoing President Ira H. Kraus, DPM, awarded both Randy Kaplan, DPM, and Rep. Brad Wenstrup, DPM, with an Award of Excellence on Saturday at the 98th Annual APMA House of Delegates meeting in Washington, DC.
The Award of Excellence is awarded to a member in good standing in recognition of outstanding national accomplishments in scientific, professional, or civic endeavors.
Dr. Kaplan gave special thanks to his father, podiatry pioneer Earl Kaplan, DPM, to whom he says he owes everything. "We all stand on the shoulders of our leaders. We cannot forget our history; if we do, it tends to repeat itself," said Dr. Kaplan. He thanked his family and the house for the award.
Rep. Wenstrup said he was honored and thrilled to be at the House of Delegates. "It means a lot to be with fellow podiatrists. Thank you for what you do to steer this profession, through many rough waters sometimes. It allows me to be successful,” said Dr. Wenstrup. "Wherever you go, whatever you do, remember that you represent the doctors of podiatric medicine."
Charles Southerland, DPM, Receives Humanitarian Award
Outgoing President Ira H. Kraus, DPM, presented Charles Southerland, DPM, with the Humanitarian Award on Saturday at the 98th Annual APMA House of Delegates meeting in Washington, DC.
Dr. Southerland was recognized for for his medical missionary work, notably his position as program director for the Yucatan Crippled Children's Project. He expressed appreciation to leaders in the profession who have been a big part in his life, and thanked his wife, children, and "all who have given me something to strive for."
The Humanitarian Award is presented to an institution/organization or individual member in good standing demonstrating truly outstanding humanitarian efforts that have had a profound impact on the public and a definable positive impact on podiatric medicine.
