More than 70 member volunteers came together for the 21st Annual Carrier Advisory Committee and Private Insurance Advisory Committee (CAC-PIAC) Representatives Meeting on Friday, November 12, in Alexandria, VA, and online. The meeting provided a range of reimbursement education for attendees. Chaired by Sarah Whittaker, DPM, the CAC and PIAC committees work year-round to ensure podiatrists are properly and fairly reimbursed for their services.

Cindy Moon, MHP, MPP, vice president of Hart Health Strategies, and Jeffrey Lehrman, DPM, APMA health policy and coding consultant, provided an update on changes to Medicare in 2022. They discussed the recently released CY 2022 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule as well as updates to MIPS. Next, Kelli Back, Esq., with the Law Offices of Kelli D. Back, talked about private insurance trends, with a focus on Medicare Advantage and prior authorization.

Gary Oakes, MD, and Laurence Clark, MD, both medical directors with Noridian Health Solutions, talked about LCD development and provided the perspective from their side of the table. Health Policy and Practice Committee Chair Ed Prikaszczikow, DPM, provided best practices for being an effective CAC and PIAC representative.

During the meeting, Theresa Hughes, DPM, was recognized with the CAC-PIAC Rising Star Award, and Ira Kraus, DPM, was recognized as the CAC-PIAC Representative of the Year. Dr. Hughes was also elected by her colleagues to serve as the next CAC chair.

Attendees heard updates about APMA and its legislative activities, and learned about the benefits of administrative defense coverage from PICA President and Chief Medical Officer Ross Taubman, DPM. As always, attendees had a chance to discuss specific public and private insurance issues they are experiencing in their regions.

More updates on this meeting are coming soon from APMA and your local CAC and PIAC representatives. For more information, visit www.apma.org/CACPIAC.
