Letter to the Editor Addresses Shortcomings in FAI Article

  • May 29, 2025

APMA members Rachel Albright, DPM, MPH; Patrick DeHeer, DPM; and Dyane Tower, DPM, MPH, MS, CAE, recently authored a letter to the editor to Foot and Ankle International addressing methodological concerns and limitations in an article comparing podiatry and orthopaedics. The article, "A Retrospective Cohort Analysis Comparing the Costs of Ankle Fracture Fixation in Orthopaedics and Podiatry in a US Medicare Limited Data Set" by Meyers et al, concluded that outpatient costs for three types of ankle fractures were lower for orthopedic surgeons than for podiatrists. The letter to the editor calls on FAI to ensure more rigorous and transparent data reporting. The APMA Research Committee provided support to the authors of the letter.
