NYSPMA Passes Modernized Scope Bill

  • Jun 18, 2025

APMA is thrilled to congratulate the New York State Podiatric Medical Association (NYSPMA) on a tremendous victory on behalf of our mutual members! NYSPMA’s modernized scope bill has been approved by both the New York Senate and Assembly. The bill now awaits the Governor’s signature. The modernized scope includes the following changes:

  • All podiatrists can now treat the skin of the leg if the wound is contiguous with the ankle. This includes diagnosing and treating skin conditions, injuries, and conditions of the ankle, including conservative treatment of ankle fractures.
  • Board qualification status in RRA surgery now is sufficient to apply for an ankle permit to allow for those pursuing board certification to perform ankle fracture fixation and ankle fusion.
  • Podiatrists may perform total ankle replacements in New York with demonstration of appropriate training and experience.

Membership in APMA and your state component supports critical advocacy efforts like this one, which resulted in tremendous added value for our members in New York State. APMA was pleased to support NYSPMA’s work and extends its congratulations and thanks to the leadership and membership of NYSPMA.
