During APMA's Legislative Conference, March 16–17, more than 100 podiatrists from across the country descended on Capitol Hill with a clear mission: advocate for their patients and push for meaningful policy change. Over two high-impact days, they met with elected officials and congressional staff to address critical issues facing the profession, especially the burden of outdated Medicare and Medicaid policies. The recently introduced Diabetes Foot Health Access and Modernization Act took center stage, driving conversations in more than 200 meetings with congressional offices, including 25 directly with members of Congress. This legislation has already picked up momentum because of APMA's significant advocacy efforts.
The conference kicked off with a celebratory moment as APMA honored two champions with its inaugural Distinguished Legislator Award: Rep. John Joyce, MD (R-PA), was recognized for his steadfast support of the physician-patient relationship, and Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) was acknowledged for her unwavering advocacy for individuals living with diabetes.
Throughout the event, attendees had the opportunity to engage with influential physician legislators from both sides of the aisle. APMA welcomed Reps. Ami Bera, MD (D-CA), and Herb Conaway, MD (D-NJ), of the Democratic Doctors Caucus, along with Reps. Greg Murphy, MD (R-NC), and Mariannette Miller-Meeks, MD (R-IA), of the GOP Doctors Caucus. Additional discussions took place at a special reception with APMAPAC donors, attended by Reps. Joyce, Mike Kennedy, MD (R-UT), and Diana Harshbarger, PharmD (R-TN), creating space for deeper conversations on key policy priorities.
The energy, advocacy, and dedication on display made this event a powerful success. Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen.
