APMA expressed its serious concerns to Optum regarding its classification of podiatrists as Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) with doctorates under the Optum Partnership Program. As noted in the letter, podiatrists are independently licensed physicians who undergo specialized education and training, and their scope of practice, level of autonomy, and legal designation clearly distinguish them from AHPs.
This letter is part of a broader advocacy effort, and APMA is collaborating with its state components societies. APMA has also reached out to Optum's parent company, UnitedHealth Group.
