APMA Advocacy Secures VA Clarification for Podiatric Physicians

  • Sep 8, 2026

APMA recently sought clarification from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) regarding how its revised Community Provider Standard for Orthotic, Prosthetic, and Pedorthic Devices (OPPD) applies to podiatric physicians.

In response, VA leadership confirmed that the standard does not restrict podiatrists and other licensed clinical professionals from providing lower-risk or less complex OPPD within their scope of practice, including footwear, shoe inserts, prefabricated orthotic soft goods, and other devices. The VA also reached out to local facilities to reinforce this clarification.

APMA appreciates the VA’s prompt response and will continue to monitor implementation of the standard to help ensure DPMs can provide appropriate OPPD services to veterans.
