In Memoriam: Arthur E. Helfand, DPM

It is with deep sadness that APMA announces the passing of Past President Arthur E. Helfand, DPM. Dr. Helfand died July 25; he was 91 years old.

Dr. Helfand served in various capacities at the James C. Giuffre Medical Center, Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine (now Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine), and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He was a consultant for the US Department of Veteran Affairs and served on the boards of the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, the Pennsylvania Diabetes Academy, and the American Board of Podiatric Medicine. Dr. Helfand wrote numerous articles and contributed as the editor for several textbooks. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Podiatry Management magazine and earned a fellowship from the American College of Physicians. He received APMA’s highest honor, the Distinguished Service Citation, as well as a Meritorious Service Award.

Dr. Helfand served as president of APMA in 1982. He was integrally involved in the work of the American Public Health Association Foot and Ankle Health section, and a devoted advocate for public health and aging Americans.
