Sample Referral Letter

A Note from David Alper, DPM, Trustee

As physicians, our instinct is to be there for our patients during crises. And, of course, the care we provide is the source of income for ourselves and our families. However, between social distancing and stay-at-home orders, our practices are being reduced by 70–80 percent. Many podiatrists are greatly reducing office hours, or have even closed completely.

It’s essential—for patients, referring physicians, and the future of your practice—to clearly communicate your status. Here are a few suggestions and a sample letter that may help.

  • Contact the Medical Staff Office of your hospital and ask for access to the staff email list.
  • Share the status of your practice with all staff (not just PCPs).
  • Be sure to include information about how best to reach you in case of emergencies.
  • Read the letter I used and feel free to customize it for your own communication.

If you have questions, feel free to contact me! Stay safe and healthy.
