The APMA Educational Foundation is the philanthropic arm of APMA and is the only national scholarship program dedicated to providing scholarships to students studying podiatric medicine.
In 2005, the foundation inherited the assets of another philanthropic organization, the Fund for Podiatric Medical Education, which dissolved that year. More than $4 million in scholarship endowments were transferred to the APMA Educational Foundation. The scholarship endowments were originally established in the 1990s through named endowments set up by numerous dedicated APMA member physicians and corporate partners.
With the transfer of these scholarship endowments, the foundation's role was expanded to include management of a podiatric student scholarship program renamed the APMA Educational Foundation Student Scholarship Fund. Prior to 2005, the foundation's primary goal was to raise funds to help advance APMA's mission by supporting its educational initiatives.
Each year, the foundation receives hundreds of applications from well-qualified candidates. Our goal is to provide every eligible podiatric medical student with a scholarship award. The foundation has awarded scholarships to more than 3,500 students to date. The Student Scholarship Fund is made possible through a multitude of programs, including named endowments, memorials and honors, and special events. Individuals, organizations, or corporations can establish a named endowment within the fund by pledging a minimum of $25,000. Through the Memorials and Honors Program, donations can be made in honor of a person or special event, or in memory of a loved one or colleague. All named endowments and contributions made through the Memorials and Honors Program are acknowledged in APMA News.
In 2015, the foundation celebrated its 10th anniversary since the inheritance of the student scholarship fund. The scholarship fund continues to generate approximately two hundred scholarships every year for podiatric medical students in each of the nine podiatric medical colleges. Since the funds were transferred to the APMA Educational Foundation, more than $4 million in scholarships has been awarded.
APMA's Department of Development, the department that oversees the foundation, and the Educational Foundation Board of Directors is dedicated to furthering the goals and mission of the foundation.
